Robert Smyth

While teaching English near the Campo de Borja wine region in northeastern Spain, he had a defining moment: he suddenly realised that wine was the most fascinating drink known to humankind. He then wanted to learn more—what makes a wine from a particular location, grape variety and so on taste the way it does. After writing his dissertation on the marketing of Hungarian wines in the United Kingdom, he entered the world of business journalism and worked for the Budapest Business Journal. He later seized the opportunity to write a supplement on Hungarian wines for the newspaper, where he continues to write a wine column today.

He has now been involved in wine for around 20 years and writes about Hungarian wines for the Budapest Business Journal (BBJ). He is also the author of Hungarian Wine: A Tasting Trip to the New Old World (Blue Guides, 2015). In addition, he is deputy editor of The Circular, the online magazine of the Circle of Wine Writers. He has also written for Borélvezetek, Borutak, Winesofa.eu, VinCE Magazin and Wine Connoisseur.

Robert holds the WSET Diploma and Advanced Certificate awarded by the London-based Wine & Spirit Education Trust. He also leads wine tours for Taste Hungary in Hungary, Austria and Slovakia, regularly judges Hungarian and international wine competitions, and has enrolled in the Master of Wine programme.
