He first discovered wine and the beauty of the wine world at the University of Agricultural Sciences in Gödöllő, through a course called The Fundamentals of Wine Culture. His undergraduate thesis focused on wine marketing, and he later completed a second degree as a specialist agricultural engineer in viticulture and oenology.
He began his career in the wine industry in 2001 and has since gained extensive professional experience in both the wholesale and retail sectors. He currently works as an independent wine trade consultant. He has always believed that scientific and technical foundations are essential in the world of wine, which is why, alongside his practical work, he has remained actively involved in academia. He earned his PhD in the field of wine marketing, with his research focusing on Tokaj wines. He completed the WSET Diploma programme in Rust, Austria, in 2014.
As an educator, he is an assistant professor at the University of Tokaj and also teaches as an external lecturer at Budapest Metropolitan University. Alongside sharing his professional knowledge, he works as a wine writer and regularly contributes to specialist publications. He is also a respected invited judge at Hungarian and international wine competitions, where he draws on his experience and refined approach to wine tasting.
Konkoly Mihály has been teaching at Winelovers Wine College since January 2019. As an educator, he is determined to contribute, in his own way, to the advancement of Hungarian wine. “The domestic market is growing, but there are still not enough people who are both able and willing to invest in high-quality Hungarian wines. Hungarian wine schools can do a great deal to help domestic wine drinkers discover, appreciate and buy Hungarian wines, while also providing an international perspective and opportunities for comparison.”
